Dusk and Dawn are two original characters made by DJ Dusk, now in SSP Ukagaka form. They were released January 14th, 2019, and update irregularly to this day.

DJ-Dusk has expressed that she wishes for this Ukagaka to be a bit of a self-care buddy - especially for those with Cystic Fibrosis, as it's a disease she herself deals with and would like to help others with. The Ukagaka was originally made just for her own personal use before it went public.

The Ukagaka is available for download here, along with their unique balloon.

History of the Characters

Dusk first came about way back in 2011 as a mere purple bat who happened to be a DJ. A couple years later, she eventually turned into what DJ-Dusk describes as a “weird chibi DJ bat thing”. For reasons unknown, Dusk became DJ-Dusk's main online persona and icon - or some could even say a self-insert character.

DJ-Dusk has always described the character of Dusk as a “positive icon” for herself. To quote her directly:

“Dusk is basically an amalgamation of my more positive traits along with my interests/hobbies. My love for bats, music, games, teriyaki wings, etc.. She also shares my birthday, orientation, and even disease - though I don't mention it often. In the end, Dusk can be seen as sort of a coping character of mine. She shares a similar fate to mine, but she came out better in the end with a wonderful partner and a happy life. It gives me hope, in a way.”

Later down the line, Dawn would be made as an opposite to Dusk. Whilst Dusk is more energetic and positive, Dawn is more calm and cautiously optimistic. Their colour schemes even oppose each other, going for the classic Red and Blue look. Dawn is not used as an icon like Dusk is, so her appearances are very limited in comparison.

At first glance it may seem like Dusk and Dawn are just good pals, but DJ Dusk has confirmed that they are actually a lesbian couple. Dusk often calls Dawn “dear”, and there's a couple lines of them spouting their love for each other.

Features

Every ghost has the basic features, but there are a good few features within Dusk and Dawn, and both bats have different things they can do.

Basics

  • The two can talk to each other at certain intervals, or forcefully by pressing the T key. They'll talk about stuff important to them, about characters they know, sometimes to you, etc.. You can change how often they talk in the config menu. (See: I need to configure something.)
  • If you have certain other Ukagakas open alongside Dusk and Dawn (by using the Call Ghost in the right click menu), they can acknowledge them! When normally talking, they may comment on the other ghost. And by asking Dusk to Talk to Others, you can talk to the other ghosts - though it is very limited.
  • By stroking your cursor on either's head, you can pet Dusk and Dawn! You can also stroke their wings, but they don't appreciate that as much. Petting them doesn't do anything, but you get the life achievement of being able to pet a couple of fluffy bats.
  • You can dress them up in cute accessories if you think they're too bland! You can go to Dusk's Dress Up! menu (See below). Note that there can only be one category chosen at once, so you can't have two Head accessories on at the same time.
  • You are able to change how big/small they are by right clicking Dusk and going to “Shell Scaling”. Do note that this will also change the Balloon's size as well unless you change it in the Ghost Preferences within the Option menu in the right click menu and un-checking Balloon Scaling Linkage.

Dusk

  • Suggest Something! - Dusk can suggest different things for you to do for whenever you get bored. She can suggest a game based off of your Preferences, what to draw (which she will ask Dawn to do), or simply what to do.
  • Magic 8 Dusk! - Have a yes or no question and don't have your own Magic 8 Ball around? Use Dusk instead! You can input anything you want and she'll respond with a variety of vague answers.
  • Let's play a game! - Here you can play a few minigames with Dusk, which includes Tic-Tac-Toe, Rock-Paper-Scissors, and Blackjack! Winning/losing does nothing, but it's a fun little something to do to pass the time.
  • Dress Up! - You can use Dusk to open this menu which lays out all the dress up items at once. You can easily and quickly put on/change accessories for both Dusk and Dawn here.
  • May I vent? - If you're ever feeling awful and just want somewhere to write down your problems, Dusk has your back. You're free to input whatever you want and just get it off of your chest.
  • Can you cheer me up? - Like above, if you're feeling awful, you can ask Dusk to perhaps say a little something that could potentially make you feel even slightly better. She has emotional, motivational, and general support options for specific, but not too specific situations.
  • I need to configure something. - This here is the config menu, where you can configure many things such as your name, pronouns, birthday, talk rate, uninstall status, Preferences, and Reminders. (See below for further information.)
  • Preferences - A short menu, but here you can configure your preferences on favourite games, holiday, whether or not you celebrate Christmas, and whether or not you want to have Dusk and Dawn speak Japanese words at all. The first two only effect certain responses to things, the other two can actively stop Dusk and Dawn from saying certain things, like talking about Christmas or speaking any Japanese.
  • Medication Reminders - If you're a person who takes medications, it helps to have reminders. Here you can actually tell Dusk to remind you at certain hours to do just that! It goes by a once a day and twice a day 12 hour system. You can also add another reminder alongside the first one.
  • Treatment Reminders - Like the Medication Reminders, but for Treatments. This time however you can choose three different schedules: 2x a day, 3x a day, or 4x a day. Whilst the 2x a day schedule goes by a 12 hour system, the 3x and 4x a day schedule have preset times starting at 6 AM and ending at 12 PM (the 3x having a 6 hour system, and the 4x having a 4 hour system). There's a bug where if you have Medication Reminder and Treatment Reminder set on the same hour, the Treatment Reminder will not show up at all.

Dawn

  • Can you do me a favour? - This is the basic functions menu where you can ask Dawn to do certain things, such as open up the Music Player, opening the calendar and SSP Preferences, checking email, emptying your recycling bin, and telling you system information.
  • Music Player - The music player allows for you to drag a .MP3 file to either Dusk or Dawn, and they can add it to a playlist where they can play songs for you! You can configure hotkeys so you can easily press a key and control the player. They even acknowledge when music is being played!
  • Check Email - This is the basic SSP Ukagaka email system, and it's complicated. You can ask Dawn how to set it up, and she'll link you to a useful guide. When checking your emails, you may notice that the number seems… inaccurate. This is because Dawn only reads how many are unread by her specifically, not how many are unread by you.
  • Give me some Ghost tips! - If you're new to Ukagaka and want some tips on what cool things you can do, Dawn can tell you here!

Can I ask you some things? - Here Dawn can explain some lore behind Dusk, herself, their creation, and origin. Basic stuff for those who wish to understand the characters better.

  • Update - If there's ever an update for Dusk and Dawn, you can ask Dawn to update for you!
  • I found a bug! - This just gives you information on how to contact DJ-Dusk if you ever encounter a bug within the Ukagaka and wish to report it.

Secrets

You can encounter some secrets with Dusk and Dawn! Most of them do with booting them up.

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR SECRETS LIE HERE.

  • Booting them up on the 7th of July or the 10th of November will make a mysterious character appear for the rest of the day. You can also encounter this character appear by having Dusk wear the Necklace of Memory. They'll also appear rarely if you boot them up at midnight.
  • On January 14th, booting them up will instead grant you two special visitors for the whole day! Afterwards, you'll gain access to them forever.
  • There's a 4% chance that when booting them up, something strange will occur…

Trivia

  • Both Dusk and Dawn have two dress up items, namely Dusk's Bow and Bowtie Collar, and Dawn's Witch's Hat and Shawl, that are blatant Touhou Project references. Dusk's items resemble Reimu Hakurei, and Dawn's resemble Marisa Kirisame - both being the main characters you can play within the games. More specifically, they resemble Reimu and Marisa from Touhou 11: Subterranean Animism.
    • Dusk's Purple Rose is most likely a reference to 65 Roses - a slogan per se for the Cystic Fibrosis community. It's a mispronounciation of the disease; coined by a child who called it “65 Roses”. Also, the ribbon is for CF Awareness is purple, but since it's universally for other things and not specifically CF, the community tends to use purple roses instead.
  • Night and Shade have dress up items; the Coat and Jacket respectively. Both are references to the 2008 RPG OFF. Shade mentions that his coat is actually a general's coat, much like Dedan in the game, and Night says her jacket always smells of sugar, and resembles Sugar's jacket.
  • Glitched!Dusk may be a reference to W.D. Gaster from UNDERTALE. Her colour scheme mirrors that of the Gaster Followers, and she says a couple things referencing ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN and being “shattered across time and space”; a fate Gaster meets. With Glitched!Dusk's main motif being that her files haven't “loaded”, this could be DJ-Dusk's interpretation on what happened to Gaster within the game.
