Baseware
Baseware refers to the programs that run ukagaka. Baseware are responsible for taking both user input such as mouse clicks and key presses, as well as environment input such as the hour changing, and sending these inputs to ghosts as SHIORI events. It is also responsible for accepting the responses returned by the ghost, and displaying the resulting script to the user, showing the text of the dialogue and making the shell move.
Since baseware are only required to send and receive inputs based on a certain standard, in theory, new baseware could be created by anyone. However, at the time of writing1), SSP is the standard baseware, used near-universally. This is because other baseware have mostly ceased to recieve updates, and thus are missing many features that SSP now has. Additionally, since most baseware originate from the Japanese community, they usually will have menus in Japanese. Even on OSes other than Windows, most users have more success running SSP through WINE than using other baseware.
