—— What is Ghost Jam? ———
Ghost Jam is an annual event where participants are challenged to make a brand new ghost within a week! It is not a competition, but rather a way to challenge yourself to see how much you can get done in such a short amount of time. And, we all love to see more ghosts being released!
Participants that successfully release a ghost within the rules and timeframe of the jam will be awarded with the @🎖Ghost Jam 2023 badge, and will have their ghost promoted on our Tumblr blog as a part of the jam!
—— Rules ——
• You may not work on your ghost outside the specified timeframe.
• You may work solo, or team up with others. We recommend teams of 3 to cover the triad of essential ghost dev skills (programming/writing/art), but your team can be any size you like.
○ If you're looking for teammates, try #🈺collab_help_wanted and #↪reply_collab!
○ You may only be on one team at a time.
• Submissions must be posted to the #ghost_download_links channel by the end of the jam. They
must use the submission form (see below) to count for the jam and
must credit all teammates.
• You can either start your ghost from scratch, or use a
publicly available template from the list of approved templates below. You may also use
free, publicly available premade assets as a part of your ghost.
○ Premade assets may be used for any area of your ghost (programming/writing/art), but only one of these areas may be completely premade assets. A ghost must meet 2/3 of the below requirements to be considered a valid jam submission:
• At least 1 new image
• At least 10 new lines of script
• At least one instance of new code (Shell code counts, basic implementation of free assets or minor adjustments to existing template code does not)
Note that submissions that are found to be breaking these rules may be disqualified, even retroactively.
— Premade Assets —
Premade assets are allowed to be used in jam ghosts, with some restrictions.
What's allowed:
• You may use code from the #free_code_snippets channel, assets (such as freeshells) found in #dev_resources, and any art/writing assets found in the #Free Assets for Ghost Jam thread. You may also use code assets from any of the approved templates.
• You can add additional resources to the channel/thread if you would like to use them in the jam! They must be free and open for anyone to use. Assets made specifically for ghosts (like freeshells) go in #dev_resources, and anything else (like public domain writing and clipart) goes in #Free Assets for Ghost Jam. If posting to the #Free Assets for Ghost Jam thread, make sure to check the pinned guidelines.
• Balloons are not considered a part of your ghost for the purposes of jam, so you may include premade balloons with your ghost, or make balloons with any premade assets.
What's not allowed:
• Assets from existing ghosts that are not approved templates, whether those ghosts are publicly released or not, are not permissible to use for jam. Premade assets
must be from the appropriate channels or templates.
— Approved Templates —
[List of approved templates](
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oJBYDwbza2c_42Y8NgsEJM51Jo4sVsJRcJ8OhyiL-HM/edit#gid=0)
This spreadsheet is a list of all the templates we have approved for use in this jam. If you know of another
publicly available template that you would like to use for the jam, please let a @Moderator know so that we can add it to this list! Templates that are not listed on the spreadsheet are not permissible to use.
When using a template, please remember that they are here to provide a basic code framework and help you figure out where you should be putting your script/images. If you are looking to use the art/writing assets of a template as-is, check the readme of the
latest version of that template for additional permissions. If no permissions are given, assume that it is not permissible to use the shell and dialogue as an intentional part of your ghost.
—— Theme and Challenges ——
Looking for an additional challenge? Below are some options you can use to customize your jam experience! These are all
completely optional, and you can feel free to skip them entirely.
No additional badges will be rewarded for completing any of these, though completion of the challenges will be listed on our wiki.
— Theme —
This year's theme is:
Rain
Interpret this in any way you like!
— 72 Hour Challenge —
Submit your ghost within the first 72 hours of the jam! How much can you get done in only 3 days?
— New Assets Only —
Create your ghost from scratch or using only a single template, with no additional premade assets. Everything has to be made fresh!

—— Submission Form ——
Last year, we had an incredible amount of entries! So much so, that it was overwhelming to sum up at the end of jam. So this year, we are trying out a submission form. Simply copy this form into your release post in #ghost_download_links, and fill out the information.
Ghost name:
Download link: (Omit if attaching file directly)
Contributors: (and links to use for crediting, if any)
New Assets Only challenge - Was this ghost made from scratch or with only a single template, and no other pre-existing assets?:
Can we show the ghost in promotional posts, such as on our tumblr blog and on our wiki?
Tell us about your ghost!: (Optional)
Please double check what you write in the form, and don't be afraid to ask questions if you're unsure how to answer. We will use the information in the form
exactly as given. Note that if the file of your ghost is uploaded directly in the server, it will be listed as a server-exclusive release. If you want it to be listed/linked to as a public release, please provide a link to a website or post where the ghost may be downloaded.
(Note: If you don't have anywhere to post your ghost, you may use our wiki as a place to release it! Please indicate on the form that you would like this to be done, and provide a link to a download of your ghost that can be listed on the wiki, such as a MediaFire or Dropbox link.)
Here is an example of what a filled in form might look like:

—— Hype Role ——
Hype for ghost jam? React with a :devparty:at the bottom of the channel to get a pink name for the duration of the event and show your @Ghost Jam Hype! You're welcome to pink it up whether you plan to submit an entry or not!
This year, we're going to ping the hype role for ghost jam related announcements! We'll still ping everyone for critical announcements, but by signing up for the hype role you'll get all the announcements during the jam as well!
For the duration of the event, moderators will be listed separately in the user list, so that we can be easily identified. We will also have a slightly lighter shade of pink for our names. Don't hesitate to ping the @Moderator role if you need moderator assistance!
Any questions? Let a @Moderator know in 🈸community_feedback!
